  • 2014 Toyota Auris - from bi-halogen to Koito Bi-LEDs

This car has the same running gear than the prius or Lexus CT as far as I know off.
The 2014 year was availabe with halogen or Xenon headlights while the Xenon headlights are so rare that I couldn't even find good pictures about out. Nor a headlight for sale.

The headlights are made by Valeo and permaseal (silikone) is used. There has to be some kind of sweet temperature spot to open these but for me it took four runs in the oven.... It was the first time I worked with this type of sealant.

    The old Projector:

    The new LED Projector:

    The two top screws:

The two lower screws I didn't use because I would have to glue in new mounting points. Instead I used the two middle screws and mounted it from the front. Because the mounting points where too perfect to not be used. The distance and the hight matched the pattern on the projector perfectly.
That made the alignment really easy.

Here you can see the two screws and also I added a small plastinc ring that helps me mount shrouds. I had to add these small shrouds because I just didn't look right. The round opening was too big in the headlights.

I think the shrouds are called iris shrouds but I am not sure anymore.

    installed in its new place:

And here with the lense back on:

These are not or sealed or tested yet. As soon as I know they work as intended I will post more pictures.

This is not my personal car so I didn't add any other features. Some white Devil eyes and a Volvo / Range Rover Style amber side marker could look in these headlights behind the clear bar that is already there.

Nice job with that shroud hack! In the USA, that car cross-references to the Scion/Toyota IM, not the CT (CT was just low beam projectors and separate highs).

The appearing of Facebook groups where like cancer to niche forums like this one.

I can't wait to try these headlights in person.

I guess technology moves on, and as I'm not a fan of fb group settings myself, some of us will remain in whatever is left...

Would be interesting to hear your thoughts; aside from my daily driver that had OE FF halogen, my other vehicles come with HID biXenon or LED low+high. For those newer ones, it doesn't seem worth the trouble of retrofitting a different unit based on the complexity of the headlight and how good the beam patterns already are. For my daily driver, going from biXenon retrofit to biLED seem somewhat questionable as well.

Switching the headlights was actually very easy. The easiest japanese vehicle I have been working on so far.

I also upgradet the fog lights (and interior lights) to led to get matching color temperatures

The light doesn't appear very evenly distributed on the garage door but on the road these are very good. The drive way is very slanted with the left side being higher than the right side.

Overall I am very happy with the projector output and the quality of the work, it was easier to mount these than I thought and no steel Mounting brackets were needed. Everything looks OEM and no additional wiring was needed. Compared to my other vehicles these are definitly on par with other OEM solutions (from like 5 years ago). And I would happily suggest these projectors to anybody who wants oem performance and japanese reliability.

I didn't take any on road pictures. There was just no good spot and I never think those pictures do the real world experience any justice.

About costs: the replacement headlights I bought for 120€, the Koito bi LEDs cost 200€, glue 15€, shrouds 10€, Osram led fog lights including the adapter bracket were 40€

Looks great. Now you make me think I want to pull out the EvoX-Rs on my retrofit (coming from FF halogen reflector OE) to get biLED projectors.

Thanks I like the half chrome look but good to know that it's possible to dechrome these.

What was your trick to open the permaseal?
