  • Haloruler64's 2000 Toyota MR2 Spyder beater build

I've been posting in random threads too much about this car, time to start my own. Quick condensed history.

Purchased with 114k miles, bad O2 sensor, worn clutch, and peeling paint. But great deal, new cloth top (high quality!), alarm, Bluetooth deck, and other nice extras. This would be my new daily, and I do food delivery in San Francisco. Manual transmission for the hills was a nice bonus.

Polished headlights, new wheels and tires (old ones were bulged), and looking significantly better already.

    Jump staring its unreliable brother.

    Random pics from this time

    Blue lug nuts

Delivering hundreds of dollars worth of food, once even over a thousand.

Installed H4 HIDs, removed them later that day because I felt so ashamed of blinding others.

Orange wheels for the Giants World Series!

    Tragedy strikes

A new era begins! Entire front end repainted at my request, making it look nearly new. Plus 03-05 projector headlights.

The output amazed me, so bright and wide even with halogens. I was absolutely ecstatic.

AMP converted Denso ballasts, TRS harness, XB35 HID bulbs, doing things right.

Identical output with HIDs as with halogens, absolutely lovely.

      Philips Vision brake lights

      Philips Vision parking lights

TRD Quick Shift Kit with the super rare TRD Duracon black knob and spherical bearings as shifter cable bushings.

      Dashcam install

      Blue stitched boot

      My babies together

      LED reverse lights

      SprengBoard dome light

        Oh just you wait

First rain of the year, insanely slippery. Hit a thick patch of pine needles in a 15 MPH turn, went sliding 50 feet, hit a double high curb and knocked over a 12 unit mailbox. No fun.

          Found out about MR2 meets

Then my suspension blew! Front struts completely lost all gas, most of the oil. Might as well build the perfect streetable suspension setup while I'm at it.

          Koni adjustable shock inserts
          Tanabe GF210 progressive lowering springs
          ROCA front mounts
          Monroe rear mounts
KYB strut boots and bump stops, uncut

First step, drain OEM strut and cut top off.

Install Koni insert and bolt from bottom. Don't forget the loctite!

Install spring, bump stop, boot, and mount.

          So pretty.

Settled height, about where it is now.

          Dat blurry colorful cutoff.

          More meets!

          Looking great

I told you not to forget the loctite... I did. Heard rattling, pulled strut out and found this.

Then my dream came true... I managed to get an OEM Toyota hardtop! Full headliner, massive rear window, quiets the interior down, and looks amazing. Drove two hours each way to buy it, got it wrapped in CF wrap.

            Off came the wrap!

Needed a little work, but I was over the moon.

            Swapped tops with a friend

Detailed the top. Clay, compound, polish, and wax.

            Black dipped vents

            I love the paint

Drive in movie time! Top down in warm weather.

Now for current stuff I wanna update you guys on. Partly lighting related!

              Switch installed

              Fuse tap for the switch

It lives! Just doesn't do anything.

Removed rear cubbies and mounted relay.

Removed seat and many interior panels to run wiring to the switch and through the firewall.

Finished crimping all the pins for the relay.

              One wire to the battery.

              Removed rear end.

Cut holes in the heat shielding, later painted the bare metal.

Test fitting my mini light bar

Had to leave for a get together, drove like this

Back to work today, ran the rest of the wiring to the rear of the car in OEM style split looming (even taped exactly how Toyota does it)

While the bumper was off, I painted the rear lower grill black. It was an ugly light gray.

And at the last second, at 10:45 PM, a rare Team Moon dual exit exhaust

Oh, and enjoy my car without a muffler. Painfully loud, much deeper than it sounds in video, and absolutely savage.

I love those little LED bars. I'm running a pair on the front of my mower and they put out a great flood light for mowing, or backing up in your case.

I really hadn't looked that closely at your style MR2 and didn't realize they had lost the trunk behind the engine.

The hardtop I bought has 5% tint so I need it!

Yup, my MR2 is smaller and lighter than the previous generations. 600 pounds lighter than the second gen. Yet longer wheelbase. The longer wheelbase meant no trunk, which sucks lol.

It's been a great build. I like these little cars! Ever thought of painting the side vent the color of the car? It would look classier that way

Thanks! Yep, I can get 03 color matched vents. They look different, more premium. About $150 if I remember correctly, already painted 8M6 blue, but that's for the future.

Haha yeah, they've bothered me for a long time. I'll be putting it together in a few hours.
