  • Started LED Retrofit

i started my led retrofit yesterday. i plan use two arrays per side; (1) for the tail/brake and (1) signal lights. both arrays will consit of 24 super flux leds in a 4x6 pattern. i plan to power the tail/brake circutis with a variable voltage regulator using the lm7812 and i'll be using the quickar pwm to dim the tail output.

    here are some progress pics:

being that i will be using a clear/euro lens, i painted the perf board silver to help blend with the exisiting reflector

    soldered the leds

    soldered the resistors

here's one of the completed arrays

    some output shots

is it recommended to put a regulator on the signal lights? as of now, i will apply on on the tail/brake lights. however being that the signal lights will operate intermittently, i'm not sure if a power supply is required.

Looks sweet. I love the led's, but I don't have the skills to build one 8-[

they are jumper wires i used to bridge the rows in parallel.

hahaha oh my gosh. now i see. at first glance they looked like some little component. now i see they are just wire. wow i feel dumb

rather than using a pwm, would it be fine to use seperate power supplies for the tail and brake and adjust the tail power supply to produce a lower voltage?

i built the power supplies for the led arrays today. as mentioned above, i'm using the common lm317 in the t0-220 package.

heatsink attached to the lm317 and mounted to the perf board

              input/output buffer caps mounted

pot mounted to adjust output voltage

blocking diodes mounted to prevent reverse voltage

              power terminals mounted

i'd be very interested in a schmatic for the LED driver (aka power supply?) you just built.

ive been to many sites trying to find out, but it just overwhelm me with some terminology.

that driver that you built, will be used to drive the led package built in ur first post?

i used the information found on the spec sheet:
                    http://www.national.com/ds.cgi/LM/LM117.pdf

yes, the driver will be used to power the array i built.

i finally had some time to install the tail/brake array.

                      tail

                      tail/brake

up-close of the array behind the oem lens. i kinda wish my lens didn't have any refraction so the leds would be more defined.

here's a little vid. it's poor quality because the leds caused the exposure to be dark.

my amber leds are scheduled to arrive this weekend. hopefully i will have time to build the arrays and install them.

                        Nice clean work....
Is the heatsink necassary in that setup? Or are you powering both left and right sides with that LM setup?

Wow! Nice job... =D> I am very interested in retrofiting my tails with LEDs but don't got the skills to do it yet. This has given me some ideas on how to go about it, thanks...

very nice and i think it looks better with a bit of diffusion instead of just dots of light.

thanks! ive been on their site, and just got confused where to look, but ill attempt on of the diagrams, not sure which one.

what page did you refer to ?
