  • Remember the Cibie Z-Beam?

Back in the late 70s and early 80s I routinely replaced the sealed-beam headlights in all my vehicles withe ECE spec lights from Cibie, SEV Marchal, and Hella. During that time Cibie introduced an 7" round H4 lamp called the "Z-Beam." It was an attempt to make an H4 light that was "legal" in the US. The cutoff was softened somewhat over what you could expect from an E-code Cibie, but the most pronounced difference was the right hand flare was clipped just as it began to rise, thus producing the tell-tale "z-beam."

I find it interesting after all these years that the DOT complient HID lamps have resurrected the "z-beam" pattern.

Interesting to see any old picture of that 'z-beam'.

Here's a pic of one. Note the "DOT" on the lens:

The beam pattern literally looks just like that of a DOT compliant projector HID lamp.
