  • The Ultimate D2S Bulb Test

    IMG_7150 by trsandrew, on Flickr

Please note: this test is to be used only as a reference. It is not any guarantee of actual results, but is merely factual findings of actual testing by The Retrofit Source. Individual results may vary.

All bulbs are brand new right out of the box.

We'll be using only D2S bulbs for this test. We use an Extech light meter mounted to a sheet of MDF with the bulb mounted on the opposite side:

      CLOSE-RANGE KLUX TESTING

This testing is a result of two minutes of warm-up as shown by the timer also in the pictures. With fairness, some were starting to rise again at around the two minute mark, but we cut it at 2:00 for consistency.

      Osram 66240 NXB (NightBreaker) - 106.1 kLux

Osram 66240 CBI (Cool Blue Intense) - 111.0 kLux

      Philips 85122XV (Extreme Vision) - 101.3 kLux

      Philips 85122WX Ultinon - 93.6 kLux

      Morimoto 3Five 3000K - 65.9 kLux

      Morimoto XB35 4500K - 101.7 kLux

      Morimoto XB35 5500K - 100.0 kLux

      Morimoto XB35 6000K - 85.9 kLux

      Generic 6K - 43.4 kLux

Wow! So the new 4300k xb35 are one of the top 3 performers! It's also interesting to note that the cbi has less lux than a NB when inside a projector but more when it's shining through the hole.
Custom shield service not available at this time.

I still think the shields are interfering with the tests done in the projector because there might be differences in bulb alignment. The test without the projector is more accurate of you ask me.

Fortunately we went ahead and didn't clip the bulb in, but shifted it around to get the highest number possible from each bulb.

Well that takes care of that then.

I have to say I am pretty impressed the way the XB35s performed. Very good in my opinion, especially holding out to the supreme bulbs like the NBs and CBIs.

Now, if only XB35s were offered in D3S....

I think the ones that were being tested were the next gen XB35's. Not the current ones being sold.

We unfortunately will not be testing with 50w ballasts at this time--35w only to show the proper function of the bulbs given all of the OEMs are rated at 35w only.
