Volvo Semi Truck VN 670 Headlamp

Hi,

First of all I want to say Hello to everybody as a newbie here. I hope this is a place where I can find answers for my questions.

What I have and want to modify is my Semi Truck Headlamp - Volvo VNL 670.

I found one thread :
http://www.hidplanet.com/forums/showthread.php?15043-Volvo-VNL-(tractor-rig)-retrofit&highlight=VOLVO+670

and his useful progress photos :
http://www.rvnetwork.com/index.php?showtopic=98187

Before I'm asking questions - I'm trying to find an answers on forum - do not bother users until necessary )

Ok, here we go.

Few months ago I decided to go for Xenon's because of poor light quality in my truck.
Purchased this one : H11: MORIMOTO ELITE HID SYSTEM
from retrofit.

Lot of people said here and there that retrofit is a great quality and there is going to be a huge difference in projected light ...
Well, quality of ballasts - yes they look really great but bulbs looks like cheap china ebay products ...
Actually I do have one (china 26 bucks xenons) so I compared them ... well ... no difference ... maybe, maybe morimoto were brighter just
a little bit ...
Actually after 170 bucks later I do have a 5-10 % more light than china stuff.

I was looking for reasons of bad light of great name : Voltage - battery 13.65, voltage on wire 13.64, on alternator 14.1
I put dedicated power line from battery ... no change at all but better reaction for switching on.

So I took one lamp home, break in pieces and look at the pictures .. mirror is retired.
It definitely need to be replaced ...

And here we getting to asking questions :
- should I follow upper tread and go for Morimoto Mini Stage III D2S or you suggest something different ?
- where I can find retrofit's products full specs with dimensions (uploaded photo of china D2S projector with dimensions)
- should I go for 35W or 55W
- If I stay with 35W can I use my 3Five Ballasts for D2S and just look for wires with D2S plug
- which bulbs D2S (or different if different projector) should I go.

I'm really looking for goooooooooood bright light. So far my experience with xenons isn't something what I was expecting, that's why I need some
answers for fans and specialists like you guys.
Some support from Matt from Retrofit hugely welcome.

Thank you so much for reading and for ANY answers and suggestions

Peace !

Alex

my friend it looks like your suffering from the typicle volvo semi headlight problem car projectors in a truck (go figure) seeing your issue just tells me its not just me comming across this problem ive used mazda OEM D2S projectors with no foreground limiter (i shaved it off) the lights performed alot better even with the OEM halogens lenses changed over hever had a problem since with them (i got a wrecker thats based on the volvo VNL 670 rig headlight sand blasting is a major problem here too so i had to replance my lights all together so far ive yet to have any issues with the mazda RX-8 xenon projector its a low beam only projector but it works amasingly for the application the MH1 would do awsomely too

i reccamend the TRS ballasts or anything OEM if you can get them cince youll get the best results

as for D2S bulbs personally ide go with osram or phillips since they are very reliable but if your going more economicle the TRS 3five would be perfect get 4300K or 5000K no higher anything higher would be too blue and not legal and DOT will nail you for them i originally had 6000K D2S (they were the only ones i had on hand they were ebay jobbies) when i brought a vehicle to the US with the truck the canadian DOT officials never botherd me but US DOT gave me a fine of 1200 dallars for em i had to go get new bulbs

i hope this helps ya out retrofitting your rig also pay some mind to the caps and the seals for em they tend to leak so if you go with OEM ballasts dont mount em to the bottom of the light mount em on the side and about half way up for them to be safest thats what i did with my rig

Yeap, sandblasting is a nightmare - lamp plastic is cheap and is not UV proof in way should be.
I just sand it with 2000 and buff it ... looks like new - waiting for UV protecting clear paint spray ...

That's what I'm thinking about but need more detail which one should I choose ...
as for D2S bulbs personally ide go with osram or phillips since they are very reliable but if your going more economicle the TRS 3five would be perfect get 4300K or 5000K no higher anything higher would be too blue and not legal and DOT will nail you for them i originally had 6000K D2S
Some say that 4300K give you more light ... more yellow'ish but more light that 5000K ... I do have H11 4300 - color is OK but I though they are stronger.

This is a war between US and Canadian DOT's. They fighting us (was in ON many times and always run around scales) and when Canadians are in US - they fighting you ... simple ... but this is a reason I STOPPED driving to Toronto.
i hope this helps ya out retrofitting your rig also pay some mind to the caps and the seals for em they tend to leak so if you go with OEM ballasts dont mount em to the bottom of the light mount em on the side and about half way up for them to be safest thats what i did with my rig
Right now - ballast are mounted inside the lamp - by low beam bulb - plenty of space, no overheating issues. It keeps ballast away of moisture and dust.

Thanks for answer

It is NOT a car projector! The shades are the only difference between it and the Toyota Solara.

So there is a difference between car and truck projector ? Because of distance from the ground ?

I'm getting speechless ...

My rig had the same thing as a car projector it had no foreground at all the lights were the pits when i installed the modded rx8 projectors i had light gallore and no issues since

You sound like everythings good you just need some nice D2S projectors maybe an E55 bixenon one with no foreground limiter on it or a good one is the FXR from TRS its a D2S projector as for ballasts denzo or matsushita/panasonic ballasts are your best the 3five D2S ballasts from TRS are also darn good too

I would go with an FX-R setup if I were you plus if you don't find the Morimoto 3Five bulbs to be bright enough you could just buy a pair of the industry standard Philips 85122+ D2S bulbs.

If you want more width than distance vision you could try to get a pair of the FX-R 1.1's instead of the FX-R 3.0's. A Hella EvoX-R could work as well as it has a great high beam. I don't really know what your exact needs or wants are so if you could elaborate on that we could better help you.

A trucking company I used to work for was always replacing those lights due to hazed over housings and burnt projector bowls.

Definitely go with OEM bulbs for the extended life and lower temperature. In a semi that would be priority #1 for me.
